Auburn Judo Club

FAQ

The questions people actually ask before their first class.

Am I too old for this?

Almost certainly not. We’re an adults-only club and judo is a sport for all ages — that’s the whole premise here. Do what you can isn’t a slogan, it’s how the class runs.

Do I need to be fit already?

No. Judo will improve your balance, core strength and general fitness; you don’t need to arrive with them. You set your own pace.

Do I need any experience?

No. Come to a few classes and see whether you like it. Most people who walk in have never done judo before.

Will I have to compete?

No. We are not a competition or tournament-focused club. We practise the fundamentals with the goal of playing judo as a lifelong sport.

Is it going to hurt?

Learning to fall well is one of the first things you’ll be taught, and it’s genuinely useful outside the dojo too — you’re far more likely to fall than to be attacked, and that only becomes truer as you get older. Judo is a contact sport, but this is a recreational adult club, not a fight gym.

What should I wear to my first class?

Sweatpants and a t-shirt, unless you already have a gi (a martial arts uniform). We keep spare gis at the club, though we may not have your size.

Either way we can get you started — the gi just makes certain things easier.

Can I just watch first?

Yes. Contact the club secretary to arrange a visit — that way you won’t turn up on a night we’ve cancelled for a holiday.

How much does it cost?

$125 per year, which is just the cost of membership to the Auburn Sportsman’s Club. There is no separate club fee. The application process is on the Auburn Sportsman’s Club website.

Is there an age limit?

Yes — you must be 16 or older.

Still wondering?

Email the club secretary. We’d rather answer a question than have you talk yourself out of coming.
